October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) – a time dedicated to recognizing the immense value that employees with disabilities bring to America’s workplaces. At Urban Autism Solutions (UAS), we see the impact of creating pathways to meaningful employment firsthand. Through essential job-readiness programs, we’re helping young adults with autism and related disabilities gain the skills they need to step into the workforce with confidence.

As part of NDEAM, we were honored to welcome Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs and the Illinois ABLE (“Achieving a Better Life Experience”) team to Growing Solutions Farm. This visit was especially meaningful, as Treasurer Frerichs has been a strong champion of our work at UAS – together, we share a commitment to independence and opportunity. Just as his advocacy for Illinois ABLE accounts empowers people with disabilities to secure their financial future, our mission equips participants with the essential life and vocational skills to build their own.

During his time at the farm, Treasurer Frerichs engaged with our students, learning firsthand about the skills they’re developing through hands-on work. From planting and harvesting to preparing produce for market, Growing Solutions Farm provides real-world vocational training that equips our participants with job-ready skills. His visit emphasized the importance of building an inclusive workforce where individuals of all abilities have access to meaningful employment opportunities. Catch the highlights from his visit.
